The additional 10 days of work might be fair enough with the kind of the review it gets from the professionals using them. I think it will do a lot good. RIM should get this highlighted in their advantages.

Re: simple example of good customer service via Twitter

The post is written in very a good manner and it entails much useful information for me. Definitely cool, but is it 10/10? Probably not.

Hey Paul

Late to this post (and your blog) I'm afraid!

Great summary and interesting problems/opportunities you've raised especially re missed opportunity for home screen refresh - but you can bet that like all Apple products there's a well thought out Roadmap that will drive incremental sales for each new release (like when am I going to get my camera on the front of my iPhone for video skype!).

The more I've thought about it the more obvious it is that the iPad is aimed at the 'lean back' market rather than the 'lean forward' market of the MacBook, iMac etc. I love browsing on my iPhone on the sofa or on the train - even though I have a MacBook that would make the viewing experience better. That's the winner for me.

Oh and of course, my thoughts on it's other primary use are now well known ;) ... http://blog.davidjeade.com/201...

Cheers
David

Re: interactive magazines. I know you guys are v.serious about it, but I think too many companies simply have 'customers first' as some sort of hypnotic mantra that they really do nothing to try and fulfil. Looks good on the corporate powerpoint though, right ..?

Re: small changes, big ripples. Nooone gets on our bus, moving forwards, without this being at the heart and soul of everything they do.

Cheers

Paul

Re: question of the day #432

Reprting line should depend on the nature of the company's business e.g. for a web company, reporting to the CFO might stymy growth and creativity vs a company that uses IT simply to keep records might be ok with reporting lines to the CFO.

Tyically reporting lines to CFO appear to generate and IT culture that is so cost bound the ppor CIO cannot deliver a half decent service to internal customers.

Re: question of the day #432

I voted no, and it's surprising to me how many times the CIO does actually report to the CFO. The COO is the obvious place for the CIO to report to, and in lieu of that, the CTO or straight to the CEO.

And is the CFO security oriented? Definitely from the financial side, but probably not from the IT side. Your financials may be in danger of being released especially if the hiring of the CIO is left to the CFO.

Traditionally, I think the first information systems placed in companies were financial, so that's probably where that culture comes from. Kick this tradition in the guts, move on, and let your CFO manage the financials (and legals in most cases) and leave the IT to the operations people.
Re: question of the day #432

No, I don't think the CIO should report to the CFO. You are right we had to live the TechCrunch peak! Not a bad problem to have though. The site should be super fast now. One thing I would like to mention is a free online help that helps buyers to choose between in-house or on-demand deployment of business apps. Put it this way: we can't even get webmail or over-the-air syncing with mobiles! And it's not like we're a super-secret organization. Maybe one day!
